Whatcom Community College recognized outstanding educators with its 2026 Faculty Excellence Awards during the WCC Commencement ceremony last week, honoring their exceptional contributions to student success, inclusive learning, and campus leadership. 

Desirée Holter, adjunct English faculty member and Writing Center Coordinator, received the Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award. Under her leadership, the Writing Center has grown into a welcoming, collaborative space where students strengthen their writing skills, build confidence, and connect with campus resources. Her work has expanded access to academic support while fostering a strong sense of belonging for students across the College.

Andrea Romero, full-time English faculty member and faculty coordinator for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility, received the Full-Time Faculty Excellence Award. Known for creating engaging student-centered learning environments, Andrea empowers students to develop their voices, think critically, and achieve academic success. Beyond the classroom, Andrea leads initiatives that enrich the college community, including the Latine Studies Spark Grant, public art projects, cultural programming, equity initiatives, and mentorship opportunities that support student growth and belonging.

The annual Faculty Excellence Awards recognize educators who demonstrate exceptional teaching, leadership, innovation, and service to the college community. Together, Desirée Holter and Andrea Romero exemplify the dedication and care that help students thrive at Whatcom Community College.  

The recipients will share brief presentations about their work during All College Day at Opening Week the September, offering colleagues an opportunity to learn more about their approaches to teaching, leadership, and student success.
