Originally from Utah, Javier Moreno chose Whatcom Community College because it allowed him to attend with his best friend and continue playing soccer at a college level while pursuing his education.
From his first interactions with the coaches and team, Javier was drawn to a program that values hard work, accountability, and a strong sense of community
Javier is studying biology at WCC with the goal of entering the medical field. Inspired by his brother, who works in healthcare and is preparing for medical school, Javier hopes to make a positive difference in people’s lives. “Science and medicine combine my curiosity with my desire to serve others during the most important moments of their lives,” Javier shared.
His experience at WCC extends beyond academics and athletics. In addition to playing on the men’s soccer team and working while attending college, Javier serves as Latine Student Union Co-President. He says these experiences have strengthened his leadership skills and helped him connect with the campus community.
After WCC, Javier hopes to transfer to a four-year university, continue studying biology, and play soccer at the highest level possible. He plans to reach those goals through consistency, discipline, faith, and relationships with people who push him beyond his limits.
Javier describes being part of the soccer team as one of the best experiences of his life. He has developed lasting friendships and learned lessons that extend beyond the field.
His goals for the upcoming season include becoming a stronger leader and helping his teammates succeed both on and off the field. As a team, the Orcas hope to compete for a championship while building a culture of trust, discipline, and accountability together.
“Success isn’t just about winning games,” Javier said. “It’s about growing together every day.”
Javier credits his mother, teammates, coaches, instructors, and the WCC environment with helping him balance the demands of being a student-athlete.
His advice for future WCC students and student-athletes? “Come with an open mind and a strong work ethic. Be willing to learn, embrace challenges, and support your teammates. If you do that, you’ll grow not only as a player but also as a person.”
Javier also encourages the community to attend an Orcas game this fall.
“We represent more than ourselves—we represent the entire WCC community,” he said. “Whether you’re a longtime soccer fan or have never watched a game before, you’ll see a group of players hungry to compete for each other and leave everything out on the field.”
