The Orchard Project is a new WCC Foundation-funded initiative that was seeded by a partnership between Dr. John Baker, former interim WCC Vice President for Student Services and Dr. Kathi Hiyane-Brown, WCC President. Its purpose is to create an equitable pathway for students to explore leadership-level careers in community colleges, prioritizing the recruitment of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. The working relationship of Dr. Hiyane-Brown and Dr. Baker demonstrates how strong partnerships from diverse vantage points cultivate the kind of shared leadership needed to achieve equity and professional success in the Community College system.
There is an increasing need to recruit new professionals seeking careers in Community Colleges. The Orchard Project funds at least two internships annually that take place during an academic quarter. Internships are designed to introduce students to executive-level opportunities and build networks of support and mentorship. Drawing on the distinguished leadership of Dr. Hiyane-Brown, the Orchard Project additionally seeks to leverage mentorship opportunities that can bring greater equity and positive change on a division level.
WCC Foundation recognizes the importance of this new initiative in progressing the College’s work to “advance equity” and support the cultivation of great community college leaders. Further support will be needed to increase opportunities for our students. If you are interested in supporting The Orchard Project, you may give here.
