Canvas Interruption and Possible Data Breach Information Page

We are writing to provide an update on the recent Canvas cybersecurity incident. 

Canvas/Instructure is continuing its third-party investigation and analysis regarding data believed to have been exfiltrated.  Based on the preliminary review completed to date, Canvas/Instructure has informed WCC that they do not believe WCC data was involved in this incident. Canvas/Instructure will provide final confirmation once the third-party investigation and analysis is complete.  

 

 
 Friday, May 8: Campus and Student Message

This is a follow up from our previous message regarding the data breach and Canvas outage. We want to inform you that Canvas has been restored, and you can now log onto Canvas. While this system is up and running, we want you to be vigilant about possible phishing attempts. If you receive any suspicious emails asking for personal information/passwords or suspicious links do not click on those or respond to those requests. If you do receive requests asking for this information forward to studenthelpdesk@whatcom.edu immediately. 

We are aware of the cybersecurity breach at Instructure, which operates Canvas for all Washington community and technical colleges (CTCs). This breach impacts all CTCs and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC). Identifying information may have been accessed, including student names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and Canvas messages. SBCTC is working with Instructure to understand what exact data was accessed.

We are aware of the data breach at Instructure, which operates Canvas for all Washington community and technical colleges (CTCs). This breach impacts all CTCs and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC). 

Identifying information may have been accessed, including student names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and Canvas messages. Canvas is currently offline. 
SBCTC is working with Instructure to understand what exact data was accessed and when Canvas will be restored.
We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
