Whatcom Community College's dance classes offer an introduction to contemporary modern and jazz dance forms as well as experiences with the creative process of making dances. The three levels of modern dance encourage students ranging from absolute beginners to intermediate-level dancers to feel comfortable challenging their intellectual and physical relationship to movement. These classes draw on a number of movement techniques including Laban-Bartenieff Fundamentals, ballet, release technique, floor work, Pilates, and yoga. Basic anatomy and movement mechanics are introduced to support an emphasis on functional alignment and range of motion. The jazz dance classes focus on developing fundamental skills in musicality, body awareness, and movement retention. Students will learn about the historical context and evolution of the dance through lessons in authentic/vernacular, musical theatre, and contemporary jazz forms. Every body and every age is welcome to participate in the fun, power, and challenge of dance at WCC.
