Mariah Bruun, Dental Hygiene

Mariah Brunn

My name is Mariah Bruun and I am a second-year Running Start student going into my senior year. After Whatcom, I am going to go to Bellingham Technical College to finish my prerequisites and enroll in their Dental Hygiene program. I did my first two years of high school online (COVID started towards the end of 8th grade) except for one PE class that lasted one semester my sophomore year. Once my junior year came along, I did Running Start and took a math class at my high school all that year. Now going into my senior year, I am doing summer quarter so I can get my associate degree and my high school diploma at the same time in June. I could've spent my summer another way, but I decided to do summer quarter. It will be worth it in the end. For my senior year, I plan on going to Whatcom and not taking any classes at my high school. It's nice that I'm graduating this year, and it will be a bonus to have a degree under my belt too!

Please share some details about your experience at WCC. What are you studying? What will do you after your time at WCC? Why did you choose WCC?

I am currently going for my associates in arts and sciences, and in the long run, I plan on doing Bellingham Technical College's Dental Hygiene Program. I probably chose WCC because it's familiar to me. My grandma used to work at WCC, and when I was a kid, I used to hangout in my grandma’s office with her. My mom, dad, and sister also went to Whatcom.

Satchel Craig, Associate in Arts & Sciences

Satchel Craig

Portrait of Satchel CraigMy name is Satchel Craig, I am a senior Running Start Student at Bellingham High School, and I will be attending my second year at Whatcom Community College. I am currently on a pre-medicine route and am working on completing my associate degree by the time I graduate high school. I’m a 4.0 student and I’ve always had a really strong work ethic. This fall will be the start of my sixth quarter at Whatcom as I’ve taken four five-credit classes over the last two summer quarters. Even though I’m full-time at Whatcom, I chose to take Spanish and Ceramics at the high school because that's where my passions reside. Outside of my studies, I play varsity soccer and basketball and hang out with my friends too.

Please share some details about your experience at WCC. What are you studying? What will do you after your time at WCC? Why did you choose WCC?

I’m currently working on completing my associate in arts & sciences at Whatcom. I’m also in the process of applying to Western Washington University and I want to major in biochemistry and minor in Spanish. My goal is to enter Western with junior status as a result of the direct transfer agreement. My goal is to become an anesthesiologist. This means that I have 12 years of schooling ahead of me. This is ultimately what made Running Start so appealing: it puts me two years closer to becoming an anesthesiologist and saves me so much in tuition costs. One of the main reasons that I’ve heard that students don’t do Running Start is because they don't want to lose their high school experience. However, with Running Start, I was still able to take classes at high school, stay close to my friends, and participate in extracurricular activities. There are also so many Running Start students at the college that I’ve been able to befriend as well. I am so grateful and fortunate to be able to participate in Running Start, and for my ability to keep an authentic high school experience while receiving college credit towards my future.

Adria Clines, General Studies

Adria Clines

Hello! My name is Adria Clines, and I'm a Running Start student at Sehome High School through Whatcom Community College. I am a senior in high school and was motivated to start my college career before graduating because I've always been a student that has craved a challenge beyond what has been offered to me, so I recognized that there was an amazingly generous, and special opportunity being offered to me with the Running Start program. I was also inspired to begin taking classes through WCC because I was able to meet some of the professors before starting, like my bassoon instructor, and I realized that the level of education offered at WCC is just as incredible as some of the local universities for a more affordable cost; I could trust that my instructors and courses would propel my learning substantially. A large part of my personal journey with education is the financial aspect that I have faced all of my life. If it were not for the scholarship opportunities, and Running Start options that organizations, public schooling, and WCC offer me I would not be able to afford completing all of the courses I would like to.

Please share some details about your experience at WCC. What are you studying? What will do you after your time at WCC? Why did you choose WCC?

I am still in the early stages of my college career at WCC, and in general, but I am excited for the courses ahead of me here. My starting goal in choosing to go to WCC has been to complete most of my prerequisites and general coursework required for the major I would like to pursue of ASL interpreting. This major is unfortunately offered at very few schools, so I am planning on attending Western Oregon University upon graduating high school. My experience at WCC is ideal right now though because through scholarships and Running Start I get to take advantage of in-state schooling, before I go into interpreting in Oregon. So far at WCC I've taken English 101, Math 151 and 152, and Communication, and am enrolled for the fall quarter! Even though these are not focused on a major they have set a great first impression of college course work and have been very supportive and interesting. I chose Running Start at WCC over other community colleges because the class sizes are always small, which makes connecting with professors super easy, and the location, and open accessibility of the school and amenities is very helpful.

Joy Robinson, Nursing

Joy Robinson

My name is Joy Robinson, and I am a full-time Running Start student at Whatcom. I provide in-home care for seniors. I am studying to be a nurse. I have always aspired to become a nurse and now that I have a bit of experience in patient care I know that it is my passion. It is sometimes challenging; however, I go home feeling confident and fulfilled that I have helped people to the best of my ability.

Please share some details about your experience at WCC. What are you studying? What will do you after your time at WCC? Why did you choose WCC?

I have had a wonderful experience at WCC. There are many resources, and the teachers and staff are kind and helpful. I use the Math Lab and Writing Center on a weekly basis. I hope to gain admittance to the nursing program. After I graduate as an RN, I would like to work in a hospital. As soon as I have enough experience, I want to become a travel nurse, as it is a wonderful opportunity to explore the world while earning a living. I chose Whatcom because three of my older siblings were WCC Running Start students and were very successful in their academic careers due to the support received at WCC.

Samantha Shein, Kinesiology

Samantha Shein

Portrait of Samantha Shein in front of the oceanThroughout my high school experience, I was lucky enough to know exactly what I wanted to do and how to help others in my life. This past year, I was at a place where my academics were the only thing holding me back from following my passions. What I mean by that is WCC is giving me the chance to get ahead again with things my high school doesn't offer. I am able to take more advanced courses as well as be more in control of what I am able to take. I will be able to have a great background in science and kinesiology before entering a four-year college.

Please share some details about your experience at WCC. What are you studying? What will do you after your time at WCC? Why did you choose WCC?

I am very excited to start at WCC in the fall; I will be attending as a first year Running Start student and will be enrolled full-time in classes. Like I mentioned above, Whatcom Community College is giving me the chance to engage in higher level courses. Courses of which will help me with my future in sports training and kinesiology. After my time is over at WCC I plan to attend a four-year college, hopefully while gaining the chance and the experience as a collegiate athlete. I plan to study for a degree in Kinesiology which will open doors with coaching as well as physical therapy if I chose that path.

Zach Enertson, General Studies

Zach Enertson

Portrait of Zach Enertson in front of an In-N-OutMy name is Zachary Enertson. My educational journey has led me to Whatcom Community College to finish high school, and complete a associate degree. And presented with this opportunity, I could not turn it down seeing all the benefits it could provide me.

Please share some details about your experience at WCC. What are you studying? What will do you after your time at WCC? Why did you choose WCC?

My experience at WCC has been a positive experience. My interaction with professors, the library, staff, and the tutoring, and the advisers have been positive enough that I feel confident I can achieve my goals. So far, I have been focusing my studies towards a business degree. I am not certain that is where my career path will lead me, but I am thankful for the exposure. I have gotten to those classes to help me make my decision. After I have taken a few more business classes, I plan to evaluate if I want to continue at WCC after my two-year enrollment to complete the four year business degree offered at Whatcom. I chose Whatcom because I was not certain what area of study I wanted to focus on, so that eliminated another local school. Thankfully, WCC offers many classes so I can discover where my passions lie.
